He may have been born Knockengllace(?), Co. Monaghan, according to the birthplace he gave on his daughter Mary's birth registration.

James and Elizabeth had the proclamation of banns said Dec. 1,1849 in Largs Parish.  There is no record of when the marriage actually took place, but it probably was at St. Columba's Scottish Episcopal Church in Largs. 

In 1851 he lived at Kirk Close, Main St., Largs, Ayrshire with his wife Elizabeth and son John. In 1861 he lived on Scott's Land at New Street, Largs, with his wife Elizabeth, son James, daughter-in-law Mary Ann, and Winaford Clark. Although Winifred Clark was listed on the census as a lodger, she was actually the sister of Elizabeth.

He died at New Street, Largs, at the age of 63 on 21 December 1879 at 11PM, from general debility. His death registration names his parents and John Lindsay and Mary Robertson, both deceased. No medical attendant was present, his son James Lindsay was present. He was buried in Largs Parochial Cemetery inj Sec. K No 7, the plot owned by him.
