The following 1880 census is the only 1880 census I've found for James W. that could be the right one but I can't be sure because of the wife's name and difference between their ages. If this is the right one, these children should be listed on an 1870 census; but I can't find any 1870 census for this couple.

Since dau Alice B. is definitely tied to James and Annie by them living with her in the 1900 census; I feel sure this is the right census for James and Annie. Lacking the 1870 census, this also is the only record I've found for Thadius, Charles, Louise, Melvina and Joseph. The inclusion of these children brings the number of children for James and Ann up to 11. On the 1900 census, Ann said she had borne 12 children.

In this 1910 census Ann says she has had 12 children. So there is one that I haven't found yet.

When his sister Catherine and later her husband Jesse Jackson died, James became the guardian of Catherine's children. Jesse had remarried but both Jesse and his second wife died in an epidemic, so James took Catherine's 4 children. But he didn't take the 3 children of Jesse and his second wife. 29 Nov 1872- James W.
