About James Illingworth

James Illingworth was born on July 1, 1804, in Bingley, Yorkshire, England. His father, George Illingworth, was 28 and his mother, Sarah [Whitley], was 28. He married Jane Hopwood on March 1, 1824, in Otley, Yorkshire, England. They had 11 children in 27 years.

According to Ingersoll's Century Annals of San Bernardino County, California, "James Illingworth, [was] of an old English-Scotch family; he was a stationary engineer, for many years in the employ of the Baildon worsted mills". This is an important piece of information since it ties James Illingworth to the same occupation as his father, George Illingworth, who was listed as a "clothier" or "cloth miller" in several records. The Baildon worsted mill is listed in The Leeds Woollen Industry 1780-1820, by Joseph Rogerson and Benjamin Gott, written in 1931. In the 1851 England Census, James Illingworth's occupation is listed as an "Engine Tenter", who was a worker that operated woolen mill machinery stretching cloth whilst drying". James Illingworth died on January 19, 1887, in Baildon, Yorkshire, England, having lived a long life of 82 years.
