J. B. Hunt, City Pioneer, Called Well-Known Retired Business man Succumbs; Crossed Plains in Wagon

J. B. Hunt, 74, pioneer resident and retired business man of Bakersfield, passed away last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sidney H. Greely, on North Haley Street.

Born in Missouri in 1854, Mr. Hunt crossed the plains in a covered wagon, arriving in Sonoma county when a boy of 7. His parents settled in that county and Mr. Hunt's early schooling was obtained there. Later he moved to Booneville, Mendocino county, where he conducted a general merchandising store.

In 1891 he came to Bakersfield as superintendent of the Hunt Brothers nursery. Later he was associated as a partner in the firm of Hunt & Hunter, conducting a general real estate and insurance business here.

Several years ago he retired from active business and since that time has made his home at Edgehill, the Haley street residence of his daughter, Mrs. Greely.

Besides Mrs. Greely he is survived by two brothers, Charles and Frank Hung of Sonoma county, two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Rogers of San Francisco, and Mrs. J. W. Ramage of Santa Rosa; and another daughter, Mrs. Edward Benson of Bakersfield.

He was a past master of the Bakersfield Masonic lodge No. 224, having headed the lodge as master in 1899, and the lodge will conduct private funeral services at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara chapel. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Note that the family chart given to me by Lola Ball states that his middle name was Benjamin but his death certificate says Buchanan. RRQS Y
