James was killed by the Indians near "Haynes Garrison," in the Sudbury Fight, King Philip's War, Apr. 21, 1676. (In the Concord Records the date of his death is given as Mar. 31, 1676, but on the best authority the fight occurred on April 21, 1676. The inventory of his estate, on file at East Cambridge, Mass., Registry of Probate, states that he was killed the 21 day of the second month, 1676.) He was shot through the head while swimming across the river at Sudbury.
