About James Holtzclaw

James Holtzclaw was born about 1745. James was not listed in the online record, only in the book. He died in 1821 in Nelson County, Kentucky. He married Bethiah ??? who survived him - the name may be a diminutive of Tabitha. Moved about 1775 to Westmoreland Co PA, later Fayette Co to live near Hardin relatives. In 1780 he entered 300 acres on Harden's Creek near William Harden in KY, but was apparently still living in Westmoreland Co PA in 1782-1786 when he and Capt John Hardin brought suit against Thomas Perkins, Edward Erskine, & Robert Wickliffe. He was on the tax lists in Fayette Co 1785-1789 and the federal census in 1790. In July of 1791, he appears on the tax lists for Nelson County, Kentucky.

Will of James dated 19 Jun 1821 left real estate, animals & household effects to Bethia. $1 to daughter Nancy Johnson, $1 to son James, $1 to son Nimrod. $1 to daughter Tabitha Anderson. $1 to daughter Diadama Edwards. $1 to son Henry and the bonds he held. To daughter Luize Snap, bonds on Lewis Snap and residue of estate. $1 to daughter Letice Leach; colt & heifer to granddaughter Nancy Leach. Harman Gratehous and Lewis Snap were executors.
