Eleanor Hindman: was brought to this country from Ireland when she was a young child (deposition of Agnes Harvey and Margaret McCutchen, dated 19 June 1795) Eleanor was the daughter of James Hindman, and was the full and only sister of Rev. John Hindman. He came to America in 1739 and found his sister married to John Fletcher Sr. He called at the home of Providence Scot and inquired for the whereabouts of Eleanor Hindman, at the request of his father. He then learned that she married John Fletcher Sr. (deposition of Edward Partridge, dated 25 May 1749) On Jan 1, 1739, (deposition of Providence Scott, dated 25 may 1749; as stated in the Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement in Virginia, vol. 2 p 432 by Lyman Chalkey...excerpts form court records of Augusta and Rockbridge Co. in Va. ) he located Eleanor and informed Fletcher, who met him at the door, "Your wife is my sister." At the time her father was still living in Londonderry County, Ireland. Rev. John Hindman who was a Presbyterian minister, was sent by the Philadelphia Synod to Augusta County, Virginia. He received a grant from Beverly in 1745. After a long time in the courts, the Beverly grant went to his rightful heir, Eleanor and her husband, John Fletcher Sr. After living in Chester County, Pennsylvania they moved to Augusta County, Virginia. Two of Eleanor's friends, Edward Partridge, 1690 and Providence Scott, 1689 testified or gave deposition in 1749 to prove relationship to Rev. John Hindman and Eleanor Hindman Fletcher. This is the same Hindman family I'm looking for, but I'm looking for additional info on James born 1693, IR and in particular his son John who died 1744/45 on a boat crossing from Ireland to America. A Thomas Carnaghan was his lawful attorney (a cousin), representing his estate in America. I'm a Carnahan descendant, looking for the connection between Hindman/Carnahan. Kathy: I start with James Hindman, born ca 1693, Londonderry Co, IR, married ca 1718 to unknown and had 5 children: Eleanor, David, Samuel, John and William. They settled in Chester Co, PA and then some moved on to Lancaster and Westmoreland Co, PA; while others went to Rockbridge Co, VA. I don't see a tie at this point. Donna

There is an Alexander Hindman located in the same area that is somehow related to this family: (From Rootsweb.com post):

Alexander HINDMAN, who bought land in Rockbridge in 1768 (listed as tithable, 1778), is part of a whole group of the Scotch Irish who intermarried and later moved to Adair Co KY. Many came originally from Chester Co, PA. I need some help straightening out the relationships of the people in this group.

HINDMANS: 1. Rev. John Hindman, b. Londonderry, came to America in 1739, settled in Chester, PA, inducted as Rector of Augusta Parish, 6 April 1747. d. VA at home of John Stevenson, on Falling Springs Crk., Oct. 1748. 2. Eleanor Hindman, sister to Rev. John, m. John Fletcher, inherited Rev. John's property. Two sons, Robert and Christian. She died in Rockbridge, 1791.

How is Alexander Hindman related to these two? In 1765 he is found in Chester PA living with Robert Hindman. Is Robert his father, perhaps brother to Rev. John and Eleanor? A John Stevenson was executor of Alex Hindman's will (1805) in Greene Co.KY. Connection?

MCELVAIN: 1. Alexander Hindman's son, Robert, married Rebecca McElvain, probably in Rockbridge about 1800 but I don't find it in the marriage bonds--Alexander's daughter Rebecca is there, however, m. James Watts, Nov 1792. Perhaps Robert and Rebecca McElvain married in KY? 2. James Fletcher married a Jane McElvain, daughter of Andrew McElvain/McIlvain and Margaret Workman. They too moved to Adair Co. KY. A B____Workman witnessed Alexander Hindman's 1805 will. Margaret's brother, perhaps? 3. A Harriet McElvane/McElvain married a Walker (Alex Hindman bought land with Alexander, John and James Walker in both VA and KY) in either Rockbridge or Adair. Not sure which Walker or when, but I think it's the same time frame. 4. An Elizabeth McElvain married a John Fletcher, Rockbridge, 5 July 1797.

How are these McElvain girls related? Sisters? Cousins? Need information on both McElvain and Workman.

The William Elliot family was also part of this group, but the earliest Hindman/Elliot marriage I know of was in Adair Co KY, 1834.
