In March 1784,James Haughton was one of five overseers of the Mohican Tribe of Indians who advertised in the New London newspaper to lease out Indian lands. James kept a tavern on the Mohican Turnpike in Montville. "It is supposed to have been erected about 1746, at which time Sampson Haughton bought the farm of Godfrey Milborn of Newport, and settled on it."(S3) There were numerous newspaper ads for meetings of the New London Medical Society and public sales at the tavern. Since James was a tavernkeeper, descendants may be eligible for Flagon & Trencher, Descendants of Colonial Tavern Keepers (http://www.flagonandtrencher.org/). References
