  • Personal notes my grandmother Emma Gillespie Dolsen Seeley shared with me about her grandfather:

"James F. Gillespie lived to be 92. He met Mary Cross at a lumber camp where she was a cook. She was 16 when they met. Grandpa was a distant cousin to Abraham Lincoln. He split rails with Lincoln thru the North East terrritoy. His family moved from Scotland to Canada. Grandpa came down to Michigan from Canada. He went back to Canada once, after he married, by himself. His family wouldn't have approved of his marriage. They were cousins to the Queen of Scotland. Grandpa always carried himself and had mannerisms like he had class. Grandmpa lost his right hand and 2 fingers off his left. He had white curly hair that he would let us brush and play with. He nicknamed me Curly. His right hand was shot off in a huting accident. He enjoyed going out in the woods and wilderness for weeks at a time living off the land. He knew all about which plants were eatable and which herbs to use for medicines. My grandfather use to let the Indians come on his land to cut birch wood for baskets. He would let the gypsys camp on the land too. The hobo's that came through town had his home marked as a place to get a meal. At Christmas Grandpa would always have a big tree with lit candles for our big family gathering." Source: Find A Grave
