Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:
- Page 373.--12th October, 1784. James Dobbins (Daubin) and Elizabeth, of District of Ninety-Six, South Carolina, to Jacob Shultz. (Note: although the location of this land is not included in Chalkley's transcription, it is likely part of Elizabeth's father's land on "Holeman's Creek" that she was apparently living on according to Jacob Holeman's will. Since Elizabeth's father's estate was probated earlier in 1784 (March), she inheirited some of Jacob Holeman's land, that he left to his daughter "Elizabeth Deskin" (later listed as "Dobkins" in Chalkley's transcriptions).

- In the name of God Amen -- I, James Dobbins of the State of South Carolina and District of Pendleton, being Some what indisposed in Body --- but of Perfect Mind and Memory thanks be Given unto God.
- Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body knowing it is appointed for all men once to Die -- I do make and appoint or ordain that My Last Will and Teftament. Firft of all I give and Recomend My Soul into the hand of Almighty God that Gave it and my Body to the Earth to be intered Deacently at the Difcretion of my Executors to be hereafter Named --- As touching My Worldly Eftate I divife and Difpofe of the Same in the following manner ---firft of all after my funeral Expences are paid I order all my Juft debts to be Paid --

Will or Bequeath unto My Dear and Belov ed Wife Elifabeth Dobbins the Land where on I Now Live with al l my other Lands and With all My Perfonal EState I now pofSefa - During her Natural Life or widowhood -- then at her Decease or Mariage --- I Will and Bequeath unto My Dearly Beloved Son James Dobbins Jur this plantation I Now Live on to him his heirs and afigns for Ever -- and the Brock horfe and Sadle Bridle and two Cows and Caves two Ews and Lams and one Breeding Sow and two Grown hogs and a good Bed and furniture an ax hoe and Matock one plow and Gears-- then the Ballance of My Land that Lyes Joini ng Wim. Hennery and John Dobbins with all My other property Not Mentioned above -- to be put on Publick sail and the Moneys arifing therefrom With the money in hand or Notes if not Colected before the Death or Mariage of My wife Elizabeth Dobbins-- I will that it be Equally Divided in Seven Shares-- and I will and ordain -- that one full Share be Given to My Beloved Son Robert B. - Vol. 1 - MAY 18, 1774. - (475) James Dobbin, vice Archibald Dickson--Constable.
- Vol. 1 - MARCH 21, 1786. - (285) James Dobson's claim of £7, 10, the balance of said Dobson's pay as a sadler under the direction of Capt. Isaac Homes; also another claim for £27, 7, 3, for the same service under direction of Capt. Thomas Hamilton. (same James Dobbin?)
- Vol. 1 - Cathey vs. Brown--O. S. 184; N. S. 65--Bill 1811. In 1783 Jacob Holman made his will in Shenandoah and shortly afterwards died. Orator William Cathey married the widow in December, 1784. Jacob's daughter, Rebecca, married John Martin. Martin died and orator took the widow and children to live with him. Then Rebecca died. Orator moved to Kenawha. Defendants are, viz: Charles Brown, Wm. Whitaker, Joseph Brown, John Hodge and Elizabeth, his wife; Larkin Raines and Hanah, his wife, late Hannah Martin; John Martin; Elizabeth, Hannah and John being children of Rebeccah Martin. Will of Jacob Holman of Shenandoah County dated 26th October, 1783. Wife, Margaret; sons, Daniel, Andrew, Jacob Herod Holeman; daughters, Elizabeth Dobkin, Rachel Holeman; daughters, Rebecca, Mary Ann. (Note: Elizabeth "Dobkin" was James Dobbins' wife).
