The census only listed the gender and age range of household members, but it can be presumed that with James were: his wife, Marietta, female, age 20 to 30; son, William H. Daniel, male, age 0 to 5; and daughter, Louisa N. Daniel, female, age 0 to 5. Unidentified members of the household were: a male under age 5; a male, age 30 to 40; and a female, age 20 to 39. Between 1830 and 1831, James lived at 363 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 1840, James lived at 297 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. He appeared on the census of 1840 in the South Ward, Philadelphia, as a male, age 30 to 40. Unidentified household members were: two males, age 20 to 30; a female, age 20 to 30; and a female, age 40 to 50.

Between 1850 and 1855, James lived at 10 North 11th Street, Philadelphia. James and Marietta appeared on the census of 1850 with their children Louisa and William in the North Ward, Philadelphia. Others living with the family included: Margaret Kelly, age 30, from Ireland; Charles Hershe, an M.D. born in Pennsylvania; and Comfort Burton, age 72, born in Delaware.
