James H. Daniel, son of Abraham Daniel and Mary Hickman, was born in 1802 in Delaware. His mother, Mary Daniel, died about 1806. James H. Daniel married Marietta Burton on 6 January 1825 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. James was a jeweler. He appeared on the census of 1830 in East Southwark, Philadelphia, as a male, age 30 to 40. The census only listed the gender and age range of household members, but it can be presumed that with James were: his wife, Marietta, female, age 20 to 30; son, William H. Daniel, male, age 0 to 5; and daughter, Louisa N. Daniel, female, age 0 to 5. Unidentified members of the household were: a male under age 5; a male, age 30 to 40; and a female, age 20 to 39. Between 1830 and 1831, James lived at 363 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1840, James lived at 297 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. He appeared on the census of 1840 in the South Ward, Philadelphia, as a male, age 30 to 40. The census only listed the gender and age range of household members, but it can be presumed that with James were: his wife, Marietta, female, age 30 to 40; sons, William and James, males, age 10 to 15; and daughter, Louisa, female, age 10 to 15. Unidentified household members were: two males, age 20 to 30; a female, age 20 to 30; and a female, age 40 to 50.
Between 1850 and 1855, James lived at 10 North 11th Street, Philadelphia. James and Marietta appeared on the census of 1850 with their children Louisa and William in the North Ward, Philadelphia. Others living with the family included: Margaret Kelly, age 30, from Ireland; Charles Hershe, an M.D. born in Pennsylvania; and Comfort Burton, age 72, born in Delaware.
In 1859, James lived at 305 North 15th Street, Philadelphia. Between 1859 and 1866, James and Marietta lived at 327 North 12th Street, Philadelphia. In 1860, James, his brother, Joshua, and his nephew, Samuel D. Daniels, all worked as jewelers at 308 Chesnut Street. The 1861 Philadelphia city directory shows two jewelry manufacturers at that address: Carros, Thibault & Co. and Rickards & Thompson. James and Martha appeared on the census of 1860 with their children Louisa, William, and James in the 14th ward, Philadelphia. Son James died during the Civil War at Gettysburg.
In 1870, the Daniels lived at 844 Wharton, Philadelphia. James and Marietta appeared on the census of 1870 with their children William and Louisa in the 3rd division, ward 1, Philadelphia. James's wife, Marietta (Burton) Daniel, died in 1872. Between 1877 and 1880, James lived at 935 Moore Street, Philadelphia, with his daughter Louisa. James appeared on the census of 1880 with his daughter Louisa at 935 Moore Street. Also living there was a boarder, Mary Williams, age 60.
James Daniel died on 3 December 1883 of pulmonary tuberculosis in Philadelphia. He was buried at Union Cemetery.
