James married Mary "Polly" (Carlyle) Harding daughter of John Harding and Lydia (Harding) on 27 Sep 1787 in , Nelson Co., KY. Mary was born about 1770. She died in 1822/1826.

"Prob. born in the Cheat/Monongahela Rivers area of PA/VA (Huron), daughter of John and Lydia Harding. Marriage bond was dated 7 Sep 1787 and witnessed by William Carlile. John Harding, father of Polly, gave his consent."

    State of Kentucky – Green County Sct.
    on this 16 day of September 1833 personally appeared in o th pen court before the Justices of the Green County Court now sitting, James P Carlile a resident of said County and State aforesaid, aged 72 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his Oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit in Order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 - he states that he entered the service of the united states as a private soldier in Augusta County State of Virginia, and to the best of his recollection in the year 1777 [probably 1778] though of the date of the year he cannot speak with certainty, that he entered the service as a volunteer in the malitia under the command of Colonel [William] Bowyer who was commanded by General [Lachlan] McIntosh, the Captain’s name he does not now recollect.
    That after he volunteered and entered the service, he with some other soldiers, was offered his choice either to serve in the ranks of the army, or to serve in driving Beef cattle designed for the use of the army - that he made choice of the latter and was accordingly employed in driving Beef cattle under the command of Shackleford, the Bullockmaster. that after the army arrived at the Ohio River below Pittsburgh they there made a short stay and erected a fort called Fort McIntosh [at present Beaver PA, summer 1778]. from Fort McIntosh he the said James P. Carlile marched in the centre of the army employed in driving cattle as aforesaid until the army arrived at the River Tuscarawy [sic: Tuscarawas River in OH], and that there they hutted and built a fort called Fort Lawrence [sic: Fort Laurens, Sep 1778] – he states that by reason of old age and the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the precise length of this tour of service but according the best of his recollection it was not less than six months, and that he has no written discharge —
    The said James P Carlile further states, that he entered the service again in Augusta County State of Virginia, and to the best of his recollection in the year 1778 [probably 1779] - that he was a volunteer and entered into service in a malitia company commanded by Captain Andrew Lawridge [sic: Andrew Lockridge], that he marched in said Captain’s company against the Indians from Augusta County to the Warm Springs, from there to the Clover lick near Greenbrier River and was there stationed at a Fort called the Clover lick Fort [in present Pocahontas County WV]. that he served under the commander and in the company aforesaid for three months to the best of his recollection and that he had no written discharge —
    The said James P. Carlile further states that hee entered the service again in Augusta County County State of Virginia, and to the best of his recollection in the year 1779 – that he was a volunteer and entered into service in a malitia company commanded by Captain Kinkaid [sic: William Kinkead], that he marched against the Indians, under said commander from Augusta County on to a branch of the Monongahela River at that time called the West Fork [now West fork River], and was there stationed for some length of time, that he served under Captain Kinkaid in this tour three months, but had no written discharge.
    The said James P. Carlile further states, that he moved from Virginia to Kentucky in the year 1780 and that he entered the service as a soldier in Kentucky in the year 1782 or in the year 1783 [probably 1782], to the best of his recollection though he cannot recollect the date with certainty – that he was a volunteer and entered into service in a company of malitia commanded by captain Vantreece [John Vantrees or Vantreace], who was under the command of Colonel Cox, and General [George Rogers] Clark, that he marched against the Indians to Ohio River where Cincinnatti [sic: Cincinnati] now stands, and there the army built a fortification called a Block house from there he marched with the army to the Miami River, and had some skirmishes with the Indians, that he served in the company and under the commanders aforesaid three months but had no written discharge — the said Carlile states that he has no record of his age, but from the best information he has, he was born on the 8th day of February 1761, and in Augusta County Virginia, where he was raised and resided until until the year 1780 at which time he moved to Kentucky where he has lived ever since, and more than 35 years last past in Green County where he now resides, that during the revolution he was acquainted with General McIntosh Col Broadhead [sic: Daniel Brodhead], Col. [William] Crawford and other Officers whose names he has forgotten, that he cannot now recollect any of the continental or malitia Regiments well enough to describe them, that he has no documentary evidence of his services and knows of no person living by whom he can prove any thing further in relation to his services than he has already proven by the traditionary testimony of John Wright Richard Wright and others, which is hereto attached, that he is intimately acquainted with many persons in his present neighborhood, and amongst them he has procured the testimony of John Greenwell James White, and others, as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services in the Revolution – he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any State. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year first above written
