REFN: 7351 E-mail from Carl J. York of Knoxville, TN (genealogical researcher retained by Richard Wilson to trace ancestry of John Campbell:) Subj: The elusive Mr. Campbell Date: 03/30/2001 10:56:13 AM Pacific Standard Time From: Averygooddoc@cs.com To: rrwilson71@aol.com Richard, the starting point here is to learn as much as possible about John Campbell from his own life -- precisely where he was at each moment, who he interacted with and why, how the extended families interlinked, etc. First, the background. Washington Co. was originally part of NC as that state extended to the MS. Green Co. was pulled out of it in 1783. Following the Revolutionary war, the area of present day TN was ceded by NC to the federal government to administer, whereupon the area petitioned for statehood as the state of Franklin (1784). NC balked and reasserted jurisdiction, but the Franklinites and NC loyalists bickered and fought until 1789, when the Franklinites gave up the battle. In 1790, the federal government took possession for good and establishedthe area as the Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio (in that period, rather familiarly called the Southwest Territory), a step preliminary to building sufficient population to vote on statehood. When the population peaked, the vote was taken, and TN became a state in 1796. There is pretty solid survival of the bound books, though a number of those were recopied in the late 19th century after deteriorating badly. Hence, second generation copies are all that survive on some of the earliest books. Loose papers have a mixed survival history, with the bulk now at the Archives of Appalachia at East TN State University in Johnson City. Other caches are held by the TN State Library in Nashville as well as at UT Special Collections and the McClung Collection, the latter two in Knoxville. Much smaller holdings will be scattered around the country. The ETSU holdings are basically unprocessed, though they have been foldered and roughly separated into decades. The process of examination is loose sheet by loose sheet, many times requiring unfolding and flattening 200 year old packets. This was the process used to earlier find the crucial ejectment document that proved conclusively the correct identity of John Campbell and the full list of his children. Case papers for individual cases are often scattered through multiple folders and boxes, and it is very easy to miss crucial documents. I have been there six days, and gotten through some 15 boxes in that time. Ideally, I need to go through another 15 to 20, as well as some bound volumes. Although I have found a number of excellent documents in the course of the current work, this should be a sobering comment on what would be required if you are tempted to proceed further. I seem to be having trouble putting together coherent sentences about what I have found, so I'm gonna start backwards. My speculation is that James Campbell, Sr., is the father of a group that includes your John Campbell and should also include the James Campbell, Jr., who was aRevolutionary pensioner in Monroe Co. KY (as well as James Jr.'s known brothers Alexander Campbell and Abraham Campbell) and a William Campbell of Washington Co, TN and very likely other brothers. I also think that an unidentified daughter of James Campbell, Sr. -- hence a sister of John Campbell -- may have married one of the Ricard/Richard/Rickard/Richards in the generation before Sarah Ricard, wife of your William Campbell, this unknown Campbell daughter possibly being the mother or aunt of Sarah Ricard. There -- I said it. Now, there is no question that the John Campbell who married Sarah Taylor, daughter of Col. Leeroy Taylor, was the same man identified in two Washington Co. deeds with James Campbell, Sr., as being son of that James Campbell.
