James Callison's will (Sr.)---To wife, Isabella; to son, Robert; to daughter, Dorothy; to son, James; to granddaughter, Isabella Callison, daughter to son John, unmarried; to son, John; to son, William; to daughter, Jean; to daughter, Agness; to daughter, Mary; to daughter, Eloner; to daughter, Isabella; to daughter, Margaret. Teste: Wat Cunningham, James Peerey, Joseph Blair. Proved, 16th June, 1789, by Blair and Peery. Executors qualify.

Will of James Callison

In the name of God Amen, I James Collison Senior of the County and Parish of Augusta and state of Virginia being sick and weak of body but sound of mind and perfect in my memory, and calling to mind that it is appointed for all men once to die do therefore constitute and ordain this to be my last will and testament and first of all i give my soul to the Almighty who gave it to me hoping to receive the same again at the general resurrection, through the Almighty Power, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the directions of my executors whom I shall hereafter nominate and appoint and touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life.

I give and bequeath the same in manner and form following. Viz:

1st I allow all my just debts and the necessary funeral expenses to be paid out of my movable estate

2nd I bequeath to my loving wife Isabella her own riding mare and a good saddle and bridle and likewise one third of my movable estate that shall not hereafter be otherwise bequeathed to be at her disposal as she may think proper with the mansion house and one third of my land during her natural life

3rd I bequeath to my son Robert Callison one third of my land during the life of my wife Isabella and life of my daughter Dorothy and at the decease of my wife and daughter Dorothy that he my son Robert shall have and enjoy the full half of my land to himself his heirs and assigns forever. like wise, I bequeath to my son James the mare that is called his mare and a little small horse called Harrey

5th, I bequeath to my grand daughter, Isabella Callison, the daughter of my son John Callison a mare colt that is named to her I likewise allow that my wife Isabella and my two sons Robert and James to portion her off when she marries according to their ability in manner I have done to my own daughters

6th, I bequeath to my daughter Dorothy my bay mare and I will and bequeath that my wife Isabella and my two sons Robert and James shall find and procure for her a good comfortable sustenance and maintenance during her natural life

7th I bequeath my son John Callison the sum of five shillings sterling as his full share in my estate

To my son William Callison the sum of five shillings sterling as share in my estate.

Page 24: the first mention of North Mountain in the records of Hanover Presbytery shows that one member of the congregation had made an issue of this matter before presbytery.

Samuel Davies Church. August 10, 1756:

"A petition from ye session of ye north Mountain congregation in Augusta, was presented to ye Presbytery, requesting that one of ye members may be sent thither to moderate in ye session in determining a difference between Mr. Brown and JAMES CALLISON"

"The minutes of Hanover Presbytery which follow show that Mr. Brown was a "New Side" minister and pastor of new Providence Church and that he had refused to baptize one of Mr. Callison's children. Mr. Callison stood his ground and Mr. Brown was summoned before Presbytery to defend his action".

"James Callison entered a general complaint against the Rev. Mr Brown and the Presbytery desire him to draw up his complaint more explicitly in order that it may be judged of at our next and also that the evidence of Samuel Downey, John Trimble and James Phillips, attend in person on the Presbytery of send their evidence taken upon oath before a magistrate and that Mr. Brown appear and make his defence. This same year 1758, the Synod of Philadelphia and the Synod of new York were reunited and the whole issue was dropped. It is possible that James and Isabell may be buried at this church.

• PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST 1788 - JAMES CALLISON with Robert and James Jr both over age 21

• The date of Isabell's death is not known but one of the provisions of James will was that the property not be sold while she was still living. Some property was sold in 1809 so is presumed to have died before then.

• May 23, 1809 Augusta County, Virginia, Robert and James Callison sell to George and Jacob Palmer Book 35 page 119.

2. James3 Callison ([Unknown]2, [Unknown]1) was born Abt. 1722 in County Armagh, Ireland, and died Bef. 16 Jun 1789 in Augusta Co., VA. He married Isabella [Unknown] Abt. 1732 in Prob. Ireland. She was born in Prob. Ireland, and died in Prob. VA.

Notes for James Callison:

James and Isabella came over in 1749, was for some time in Albemarle Co., VA, and then settled in Augusta Co, VA. James and Isabella lived for some time in Augusta Co. Virginia and James seems to have made quite a name for himself. He worked on a road construction crew and served as witness for several legal documents in courts. He also owned some land as did some of his sons.

He died in 1789. His will was proved the 16th of June 1789. Some indicate that he died in 1787.

Mentioned in his will were his children : Robert, Dorthy, James, John, William, Jean, Agness,

Mary, Eloner, Isabella, Margaret. He mentioned one grandchild, Isabella daughter of John.

Ref: Chronicle of Scotch Irish Settlers in Virginia. Augusta County Virginia Vol. 1 - 3. There is an indication he resided for some time in Albemarle Co., VA.

For any descendants of James and Isabella Callison, here are my notes on this couple. If anyone has anything more, I surely would appreciate them. I thought it might be beneficial to take each of those males in the earlier email and compare notes. If this would not be beneficial-- just say so. I am really hoping to get help duplicating some of work on other lines that I lost my files for. So here goes with James and Isabella. The birth and Marriage of James is unknown. He is thought to have immigrated from County Armagh, Ireland but the year is unknown. The James Callison who married their daughter, Mary, came from County Armagh, Ireland and court records indicate that the two Callisons were related.

Augusta County, Va court records on March 21, 1806, This day Robert Collason (son of James) made oath before me a justice of peace for the above County that he has long been acquainted with James Callason, they being relatives...Signed John Waugh

No marriage record has been found for James and Isabell in Virginia so they may have been married in Ireland. The maiden name of Isabell could possibly be Gillespie simply because so many descendants from different lines utilized this name as a middle name.

James and Isabelle attended the Presbyterian Church in Virginia which reinforces their Scotch Irish ancestry
