James Borrill was born in 1799.

It should be noted that his surname is spelt Burrill on the marriage record with Martha and then Borrill in the 1851 census.

A number of other people were also named James Borrill and therefore James has had his parents listed as a number of different couples by different researchers. Below is some information on each couple and present a case for each potential set of parents.

Contents

Samuel Borrill and Elizabeth Brockelsby

As presented on this page, this couple appear to be the correct parents of James. This connection is based on the location of both their marriage and the stated birth location for James. Assuming that stated birth location and years of birth in close proximity to Samuel and Elizabeth's marriage are relevant, then James has at least three brothers.

There is a christening record for James Borwit on the 20th April 1799 in Great Limber, Lincolnshire with parents Samuel and Elizabeth which has been suggested that this could be for James. In the 1851 census, his age is listed as 50 which is reasonably close to what it should be if he was born in 1799.

Name connections could be established based on his children's names.

  1. Henry Hobson Borrill – Clearly including both his parents surnames. Additionally Henry Hobson was the name of one of Martha's cousins who was also born in Great Limber within a year of James and grew up together in the same town so it is possible James and Martha came to know each other through their friend and cousin, Henry Hobson.
  2. Francis Borrill – Second son has his maternal grandfathers first name
  3. Ann Borrill – First daughter has her maternal grandmothers first name
  4. Samuel Borrill – Third son has what would be his paternal grandfathers name
  5. Elizabeth Borrill – Second daughter has what would be her paternal grandmothers name

Mark Borrill (Burrill) and Elizabeth Cash

The reference to Mark and Elizabeth S3 being James parents seems unlikely because their son James was born in Hainton in about 1806. This reference likely came about because the relevant christening record was the closest in location and age that could be readily found and so likely without looking further someone has assumed that these are the correct parents.

James Borrill and Mary Bond

It appears that this reference is incorrect as James is clearly born on 3 July 1808 in Great Carlton, Lincolnshire, which would make him 15 years old at the time of his marriage.

John Borrill and Ann Russell

The only available information for this James Borrill is that he was born in 1806.
