Was first married to Jacoba Elizabeth Engelbrecht (died 1854). Was born on the banks of the Olifants River, Cango (Oudtshoorn) and christened in George. Had six sons and six daughters (one son from first mattaige). He was raised by family members because his parents passed away when he was young. At the age of 8 he participated in the Great Trek and was at the battles of Sooi and Modder Laer in Natal. Later he moved to Fauresmith and te on to HAMBURG in the Boshof district.
