BIOGRAPHY: The Towne Family Memorial A. N. Towne, Esq. San Francisco, Cal. Edwin Hubbard, Chicago, Ill. Fergus Printing Compay, 1880 Page 22 Jacob Towne, son of William 1 and Joanna Town, was baptized a Yarmouth, Norfolk Co., Eng., March 11, 1632, resided at Salem, Essex Co. Mass., in the "North fields," with his father, about twelve years; md, June 26, 1657, Catherine, daughter of John Symonds, of Salem; made his will at Topsfield, Nov. 24, 1704, and died the third day following, aged about 73 years. His will was proved Jan. 1. 1705. son John 3, executor.

Jacob was on Topsfield's original list of 30 commoners. The list, used as means of regulating the cutting of wood and to restrain those who were not "common", served as a basis for later divisions of common land. After their marriage, Jacob and Catherine lived near William Towne at Topsfield. Jacob was made a freeman on 16 Feb 1685/86 at Topsfield.
