Facts and Events
From Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County ... a man of thrift, and considerable note, made his early home in Groton, Conn. Later he settled in the North Parish, New London, now Montville, Conn., where he became the possessor of large tracts of land. Here he also spent his last days and died. According to his headstone, Jabez served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Stanton's Company. In the 1800 census, his numbers were 4-1-1-0-1-0-1-1-0-2 In the 1810 census, his numbers were 1-1-2-0-1-0-0-1-0-1-0 From Richard S. Holmes Census records for Jabez and Lydia Holmes Year Number Age Birth 1790 1 male >16 bef 1774 2 males <16 aft 1774 5 females -- 1800 4 males <10 aft 1790 1 male 10-16 1784-1790 1 male 16-26 1774-1784 1 male >45 bef 1755 1 female 10-16 1784-1790 1 female 16-26 1774-1784 2 females >45 bef 1755 1810 1 male <10 aft 1800 1 male 10-16 1794-1800 2 males 16-26 1784-1794 1 male >45 bef 1765 1 female 16-26 1784-1794 1 female >45 bef 1765 [for 1820 head of household was Lydia; Jabez died 1814.] 1820 1 male 10-16 1804-1810 2 males 16-26 1794-1808 1 female >45 bef 1775 Starting with 1800, one of the two females over 45 was Lydia, and perhaps the other was Jabez's widowed mother Lucretia. (Baker says she went to live with Samuel in Salem, though. So possibly this was one of Jabez's sisters instead, or a relative on Lydia's side.) The one age 16-26 would have been Lovina. The younger one is most likely another girl -- whether Hannah or not is open to question! From Margaret Harris Stover's article on Samuel Holmes of Montville, Connecticut in the Mayflower Quarterly (references omitted) Jabez farmed in Groton and in the North Parish of New London, now Montville. On 11 July 1814 Ephraim Holmes of Montville was appointed administrator of the estate of Jabez Holmes of Montville with Zadock Wickwire as surety. On 10 Nov 1843 the estate was distributed: 5/7 to Charles B. Holmes late of Montville and 2/7 to Ephraim H. Holmes "now gone to parts unknown." [His will is not on record, only supporting documents, including an inventory dated 13 June 1814.] The inventory of Jabez's estate included a loom and three spinning wheels, four beds and bedding, four sets of curtains, iron and tin ware. A horse and one yoke of oxen joined swine and cows on the farm. From Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County, Connecticut, J.H. Beers & Co. (Chicago, 1905), pp. 833-835. (VI) Jabez Holmes, grandfather of George N., a man of thrift, and considerable note, made his early home in Groton, Conn. Later he settled in the North Parish, New London, now Montville, Conn., where he became the possessor of large tracts of land. Here he also spent his last days, and died. He married a Miss Harris, and they had six children: Nathan, proprietor of the "Thames Hotel," of Norwich, who died in that place; Charles, who carried on the Montville homestead, and died there; Harris, who died of yellow fever in his young manhood; Stephen, during his young manhood a musician, who later went South and was never afterward heard of; Bartlett, who is mentioned below; and Gilbert, first a farmer near Syracuse, N.Y., who later returned to Connecticut, and died at Waterford.
