Israel4. Abraham4. Abigail4. Sarah4. By a deed dated 3 March 1712 (Milford Records vol. 4, page 263) Israel and Abiram sons 'of Thomas Canfield late of Milford, deceased' conveyed their interests in their father's estate to their elder brother Thomas for £100. Israel probably left about this time for Newark, N. J. His name is on a jury list in Newark, dated 1715. On 14 March 1721, he was chosen 'Overseer of the Poor'. On 10 March 1729/30, he was chosen 'Fence Viewer.' On 14 March 1731/2, he was chosen 'Overseer of the Poor.' On 13 March 1732/3, he was chosen 'Fence Viewer,' and again on 11 March 1734/5. He was a prosperous and well-to-do man for his day. He owned a large tract of land in the westerly part of Newark, and also several tracts of meadow land. He had a tannery where he made leather and shoes. He was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Newark, but was removed to the yard of the 1st Pres. Ch., where his headstone is still standing. His will dated 24 April 1744, is in the office of the Secretary of State in Trenton, N. J."
