Isobel was born in 1805, the youngest of four children of Robert Sherrat, who was the overseer of the Farquharson estate at Finzean. Sometime between 1808 and 1812, the family moved out of the estate house to nearby Tillyfruskie farm. They lived there until Isobel's father died in 1818 (when she was 13 years old). Isobel, along with her widowed mother and a brother, moved in with her older sister Christian, who was then married and living at Woodend (near the Forest of Birse). There is no record of Isobel after 1819, and she is not known to have married.
