OBITUARY

MR. I. CLYDE. Mr. Isaac Clyde, of Swan-street, Morpeth, died in Maitland Hospital last night after a brief illness. He was 77. He entered the Railway Department when he was 14, and his 53 years' service was the longest term of any employee in the department. Next to his record is one of 51 years' service. In later years he was stationmaster at Dubbo, Mount Victoria, Cootamundra, Tarana, Cockle Creek. He went to Morpeth in 1916, and retired from the service at that station in 1931. Mr. Clyde was stationed at Tarana when a big railway smash occurred, and he was commended and presented with a medal by the Commissioner for his work on that occasion. In 1912, when an inquiry was held into the wages and conditions of railway employees, Mr. Clyde represented the employees on the board. Mr. Clyde took an active part in public affairs at Morpeth. He was an alderman for several years, and was twice Mayor. He was President of the Hunter District Cricket Association, and when he retired was made a life member. He was also a life member of the Freemasons' Benevolent Institute. an honour bestowed on him for his work at Mount Victoria. He is survived by his wife, five sons, Cyril (Hamilton), Athol (Sydney), Milton (West Maitland), Robert (Picton), Stanley (on active service), and two daughters. Mesdames A. Hopwood (Hamilton) and C.
