Carlisle, dau. of Orville Carlisle and therefore niece of Ashley and Bella.] __________________________________________________ The Second Michigan Calvary was organized by Congressman the Honorable FW Kellogg of Grand Rapids. Recruitment was completed October 2, 1861 with 1163 officers and men o the rolls. The Regiment left Grand Rapids on November 14, 1861 under the command of Lt Col Davis. When they arrived at Benton Barracks, St Louis, MO, Col Gordon Granger of the US Army took comand. They were assigned to General Pope's Army, taking part in operations at and about New Madrid, MO and Island #10, having skirmishes with the Confederates at Point Pleasant and Tipton Station in March 1862. After the capture of Island #10 the unit moved on to Farmington, MS, and being in the advance, it encountered the Confederates at Pine Hill on May 2, then at Monterey on May 3 followed by Farminton on May 5. During the seige of Corinth, they were engaged in scouting and picket duty. From there they moved onto Booneville were they won a small victory. Then they moved through Louisville to Perryville where they engaged the Confederates with their long range rifles. They then followed the fleeing Confederates to Harrodsburg, engaging them there on the 10th. Image Gallery
