Irene loved knitting and crocheting. Whenever idle, she would have her bag with her knitting supplies handy. Jan remembered hearing that Irene's family were French hugenots. They escaped religious persecution by moving out of France to Germany and other parts of Europe. Dave and Carol remembered that she loved crossword puzzles, pork, and candy. She made felt ornaments at Christmas as well as felt refrigerator magnets.
