Birthdate

Some sources have Col. Hugh McGary's birthdate as in 1744 or 1747, but based upon records in Augusta County, it is more likely that he was born sometime 1735-1738. More research needed.

    Birth: Mar. 10, 1747 [??], Ireland
    Death: May 1, 1805
    Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana, USA

Hugh McGary was born in 1744 in Ireland. On 5 December 1759, Hugh and Edward McGeary sold land in Augusta County, Virginia. This was land that they had received for service to Virginia. His service may have been as a teamster or cattle driver in a campaign against the French and Indians in 1758 when Hugh was only fourteen years old. In that year, Hugh and Robert McGary were in the Augusta County militia. Edward and Robert may have been brothers of Hugh.

Around 1767 he moved to the North Carolina frontier and married widow Mary Buntin Ray and became a stepfather to her three sons: James, William, and John Ray. McGary's children by his first wife, Widow Mary Buntin Ray, were Robert, Daniel, and Mary Ann McGary. It possible that there was a daughter, Rosanna McGary.
