• 27 December 1784 - Rockingham County, VA Minute books, 1778-1878, pg. 397; The last Will and Testament of Hugh Douglass Dec'd Having been proved in Court and the Exec'r therein named having Refused to take upon them the Execution of ye Will, and it being also made Appear to the Court that Jas. Douglass heir Ap't at law, Refused to Take upon him the Adm'r of the Estate, Adm'r is therefore granted to Joseph Douglas and George Huston With will annexed, they having Complied with the Law, and probate is granted them (in) Due form. O that Jas Davis, Wm. Smith, Joseph Smith, Ralph Loftes, or any three of them being first sworn, Do Appraise the sd. Estate.

• Vol. 1 - FEBRUARY, 1749 (A). - Mary Dyer vs. Hugh Douglas.--Chancery, Write dated 26th August, 1749. Mary, administratrix of her husband, Peter Dyer, oratrix. In 1746 Peter agreed to buy a plantation from defendant on Stinson's (prob. Stephenson's) Mill Creek. Peter died intestate, leaving no child.

This Indenture made the twenty Second Day of May in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine between Hugh Duglass of Rockingham County of the one Part and John McVey of the county aforesaid of the other Part Witness that the said Hugh Duglass for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty Two Pounds current money to him in hand paid by the said John McVey the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge doth Grant Bargain and Sell unto the said John McVey and his Heirs one Tract of land lying and being in the County of Rockingham on a branch of the North River called Fishers Spring above the land Douglass now lives on containing forty two acres and an half it being Part of the Tract of Eighty-five acres which was granted to the said Hugh Douglass by Patent Bearing date 12 Day of February 1755 bounded as followeth to wit Beginning at two Pines at the foot of a hill on the east side of a branch and running thence crossing the same south fifty five degrees west sixty poles to a Locust and Pine thence north fifteen degrees west one hundred and twenty six poles to a black oak Sapling thence crossing the tract north eighty seven degrees west eighty five poles to a white oak and Pine on the old line thence south three degrees west eighty four poles to the beginning together with the appurtenances thereto belonging to have and to hold the said tract of land with its appurtenances unto the said John McVey and his heirs and the said Hugh Duglass and his heirs will warrant and defend the said tract of land with its appurentenances unto the said John McVey and his heirs against the claim of any person or persons whatsoever claiming by from or under him. In Witness whereof the said Hugh Duglass hath hereunto subscribed the name and affixed the seal the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered his in the presence of us Hugh X Douglass seal

Clark Co., KY 24 Feb. 1796

This indenture made between James Douglass and Hannah his wife and Nathaniel Douglass and Elizabeth his wife all of the County of Clark in the state of Kentucky of the one part and Joseph Douglass of the state of Virginia of the other part which said James, Nathaniel and Joseph are brothers and sons of Hugh Douglass late of the county of Rockingham in aforesaid state of Virginia deceased whereas the said Hugh Douglass by his Last will and testament bearing the date 28 day of September 1780 duly proved and now of record in the court of the county of Rockingham did order all his lands to be sold and the money arising therefrom to be equally divided between his three sons the aforesaid James Nathaniel and Joseph the parties hereto and of his said will the said Hugh Douglass appointed John Davis Senr and Wm Smith Executors who having refused to take upon them the burthen of the Execution thereof the Court of the said county of Rockingham did grant the administration with ye will annexed to the above Joseph Douglass, and whereas also the said James, Nathaniel and Joseph the parties hereto agrees to have the land mentioned in ye will of their said father valued, and the sd Joseph Douglass payint to the said James Douglass and Nathaniel Douglass tow third of such valuation should have the lands, which sd lands in pursuance of the sd agreement was afterwards valued at two hundred pounds Virginia Money Specie. Now this Indenture witnesseth that the sd James Douglass and Hannah his wife Nathaniel Douglass and Elizabeth his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty three pound six shillings and eight pence Virginia Money in specie to them in hand paid the Joseph Douglass the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge. Have granted bargains and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Joseph Douglass two thirds of a certain piece or parcel on land contain one hundred and thirteen acres being part of a greater tract of one hundred seventy five acres granted by patent to the sd Hugh Douglass the 12th day of July 1750 the remaining sixty two acres, being conveyed by sd Hugh Douglass in his life time to the said Joseph situate lying being in the county of Rockingham late (Augusta) on the north branch of Shenandoah River and bounded as follows viz beginning near a rock on the north bank of the north branch of Shenandoah River and running thence crossing said river s 25 degs ws 30 (?) poles up the river to an oak and pine on the bank of the river at the foot of the round hill thence crossing sd river s 79 degs wt 64 polses near a pine in the line of John Davis' land thence with the sd line no 34 degrees wt 90 poles to his corner two pines, thence n 16 degs et 42 poles crossing a branch to two pines thence no 5 degs e. 88 poles to two pines thence no 35 degs et 100 poles to two pines thence so 31 degs et 104 poles to the beginning. Also two thirds of another tract or parcel of land containing ninety acres being part of a greater tract of two hundred and ninety acres granted by patent to the sd Hugh Douglass bearing date the 25th day of September 1762, the remaining two hundred acres being conveyed to the said James Douglass by his father Hugh Douglass in his life time situated lying and being on the north side of the north river of Shenandoah in the county of Rockingham (late Augusta) and bounded as follows beginning at three pines corner to George Brighams land and running thence no 18 degs eight poles to a pine thence no 65 degs to 136 poles to a white oak and three pines thence s 51 deg et 140 poles to four black oaks thence so 82 deg et 112 poles to three pines near a road thence n 24 deg wt 160 poles to the beginning, together with all and every its appurtenances to have and to hold the said two thirds of the above described two several pieces or parcels of land of one hundred thirteen acres and ninety acres with all and singular its several appurtenances to the said Joseph Douglass and his heirs to the sale use and behoof of the said Joseph Douglass his heirs and assigns forever and the said James Douglass and Hannah Douglass his wife the the said Nathaniel Douglass and Elizabeth Douglass his wife for themselves and their heirs doth covenant and grant to and with the said Joseph Douglass and his heirs that the said James Douglass and Hannah Douglass his wife Nathaniel Douglass and Elizabeth Douglass his wife and their heirs the said two thirds of the said two parcels or tracts above mentioned with it several appurtenances unto the said Joseph Douglass and his heirs against all persons whatsoever will warrant and defend. In witness whereof the sd James Douglass and Hannah Douglass his wife Nathaniel Douglass and Elizabeth Douglass his wife have severally set their hands and assigns their seals this 23 day of Feby one thousand seven hundred and ninety six. Also patented land in 1750 and 1762 Page from History of Rockingham Co. attached showing Hugh Douglas received a patent for 175 acres of land just west of Round Hill, above Bridgewater, in 1750. 2/12/1755 Hugh was granted patent 85 acres on a branch of the north River called Fishers Spring above his own land. Augusta Co. In 1762 Hugh was granted a patent on 290 acres on the north side of the North River of Shanando, Patents No. 35, 1762-1764 (v.1 & 2 p. 1-556, p. 10 (Reel 35). Also 45 acres on the n side of the land he now lives on near n. side of the North River (From Library of VA records)
