Overview

Hugh Cowan/Coen/Cowing/Cowin/Cowen who was born sometime between 1765 & 1770 according to the Census records, and Tax Lists. He married a Margaret Buchanan on 9 Oct. 1794 in Bourbon Co., KY. He was apparently in Franklin Co., KY in 8-10-1801 when he is shown with with various members of the Buchanan family, presumably kin to his wife, Margaret Buchanan. His son, Wilson Cowin, was born there before coming to southern Indiana Territory where he married & had children.

Ancestry

The parents of Hugh Cowan (11) have not been identified. YDNA analysis suggests that Hugh may be distantly related to the Seven Cowan Brothers group, though any such connection appears to be at the edge of a genealogically meaningful timeframe. The common ancestor may predate the immigration of the Seven Brothers to America.

Suggestions

There have been indications that the family of Margaret Buchanan was living in Bourbon County Kentucky at the time of her marriage to Hugh. Those indications suggest that she might have been one of several sisters and brothers. Information on the Buchanan's of Bourbon County might lead to the identification of her parents. Tracing her family history may lead to insight into the identity of Hugh's family.

Something that might also help is to obtain a YDNA test result from someone else tracing their descent from Hugh, perhaps through another son. If a solid match is obtained from such a line then that serves as a degree of validation of a mutual common ancestry, an d perhaps validation of common descent from Hugh.
