Harpel, Sr., 70, was stricken suddenly on Sunday while attending Sunday School at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, souderton. He was taken to Grand View Hospital in the Souderton Community Ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:05 a.m. He had been under a doctor's care, and had been a patient at Grand View Hospital for a week in October.He had lived at 25 Melvin Road, Telford, for the past 15 years, and had formerly resided on Route 113, Souderton.He was born in Marlborough Township, son of the late Silas and Sallie (Schwager) Harpel.Mr. Harpel was a upholsterer, and was employed by the Vogel and Feingold Furniture Company Telford, for 28 years. He retired in 1975, but had continued to work part-time for the company until his illness in October.He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Souderton.He is survived by his widow, the former Eleanor Mae Stringer; two sons, Dr. Howard S., Jr., Souderton, and Captain Leslie D. stationed at the Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; four grandchildren; two brother, Preston S. and Herbert L., both of Souderton, and two sisters, Carrie, wife of Jacob Devine, Sumneytown, and Verna, wife of Edward W. Barnes, Hatfield. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Clifford.Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Souderton, Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Richard G. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Souderton.Friends may call at the church on Thursday prior to the service from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, or the Souderton Community Ambulance Association.The Virgil G. Sommers Funeral Home, Telford, is in charge of arrangements.
