Facts and Events
Horace enlisted as a surgeon in Company S, 105th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 5 Sep. 1862. According to the Chicago Tribune: "Dr. Potter, at the time he entered the service was a resident of this city, and had been long and most favorably known to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Cook and Dupage counties, and was in the enjoyment of an extensive and lucrative practice. But at the call of his country, in the summer of 1862, he left everything and accepted the post of surgeon to the 105th regiment, which was composed in a large degree of his old friends and acquaintances. It was to the earnest solicitations of these friends, who felt the importance of medical adviser on whom they could rely, no less than to his own sense of duty, that the Doctor gave up the enjoyment of home for the hardships and privations of the camp. He was soon promoted to the post of surgeon of the brigade to which his regiment belonged, and not long after that to medical director of the division. These promotions created no surprise among his numerous friends who were acquainted with his merits."
"We are not informed of the particulars, but learn that the deceased, with two or three members of the medical staff, was in search of a site for a hospital, and without knowing the dangerous proximity, had proceeded within range of the enemy's guns, when he was instantaneously killed by a rebounding shell, which fell a short distance from the party."
