Note map below. FRILLE, where Hermann was born and died, is located astride the former border, in this 1912 Schaumburg-Lippe map. The Prussian side of the border (then) is in blue. The red side on the right, is the former independent country of Schaumburg-Lippe. During Hermann's lifetime, there was only one church; a Lutheran church, located on the Schaumburg-Lippe side.

The two Frille communities during Hermann's time were in two separate countries! The border "zig-zagged" through the town. Each side had their own schools, their own fire departments, their own currency, their own laws, their own holidays, etc. It must have been confusing!
