Origins

Descendants of William Alexander Shaffer have a family story that Hepzibah was daughter of William Strother of Fairfield County, South Carolina. He is said to have died 1799. Hepzibah also is said to have died in Fairfield County about 1803. Hepzibah is said to be buried in the Strother family cemetery near Winnsboro, Fairfield, South Carolina. William Alexander Shaffer is said to have visited his mother's grave in his later years.

The family stories do not mention the mother of Hepzibah Strother.

    My grandmother, Hepsibah Elizabeth (Strother) Shaffer died of pneumonia in 1803 when she was 22 years old in Winnsboro, S.C., Fairfield Co. She was short, a little stout, & had Titian colored hair. Some of the Strother & Dargan homes were among the chains of forts at the time of the Revolution.
