Notes

This Henry Towles was a soldier and pensioner of the American Revolutionary War . According to his pension declaration, he lived "on the plantation where I was born." His will, dated May 6,1835 and proved May 26, 1836, became the basis for the Clark v.Towles suit, referred to in his father Stokeley's notes. The gist of the will seems to be that he wanted all of his property sold and distributed to his full sister Mary's and her husbands John Clark's family. Apparently the descendants of Stokeley's other children didn't like this, and consequently sued and won some sort of readjustment. "

William B. Newman (Genealogy of Virginia Families Vol. III, "Towlesand Clark Families")

The suit brought by the descendants of the Towles and Clarks overturned the will in Chancery court, VA in 1845.
