Wednesday, November 08, 2006 Henry Miller Reed, 83, of West Caldwell, died on Friday, Nov. 3.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell, Bloomfield and Roseland Avenues, Caldwell, at 11 a.m.Mr. Reed was born in Brooklyn. His family moved to West Orange and he graduated from West Orange High School in 1940. He was awarded a diploma by Bucknell University in 1944. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a communications officer on the destroyer USS Buchanan in the Pacific theater. He established his own insurance agency in 1948 and became president of Askin, Weber & Reed Inc., from which he retired in 1988.He was considered the leading authority on the artist A. B. Frost, who is known for his sporting illustrations, and for his illustrations of Joel Chandler Harris? Brer Rabbit stories. Mr. Reed authored ?The A. B. Frost Book? pub-lished by Charles E. Tuttle & Co. in 1967, and wrote an expanded edition in 1989. He served as guest curator at the Montclair Art Museum for the exhibition ?A. B. Frost, His Family, and Their Circle.?In 1985, Mr. Reed presented to the Montclair Art Museum a major collection consisting of over 1,000 drawings, watercolors, photographs, letters and notebooks by the American modernist painter Morgan Russell. He had served on the Board of Trustees of the Montclair Art Museum, and was also a longtime member of the Montclair YMCA.Mr. Reed is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Griffith Reed; a son, Robert G. Reed and his wife Joyce; a daughter, Virginia R. Demoreuille and her husband Bernard of Montclair; and five grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell, Bloomfield & Roseland Avenues, Caldwell, NJ 07006, would be appreciated.
