'I have no doubt that the family in Massachusetts was founded by David Badcock, who ... was probably father of George Badcock and Robert Badcock, both of Milton, and possibly father of James Badcock, ... Margaret, wife of Henry Leland of Sherborn, seems to have been sister of George and Robert Badcock ...' (The book contains some additional arguments in support of these theories.)

    Part IV 452 f Leland, 2000.

There is no evidence that the supposed father of Henry Leland called "Hopestill Leland" ever existed according to The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton p 453 published by New England Historical and Genealogical Society in 2000 stating that it was a generational error made by Savage. Savage invented a father of Henry Leland by conflating him with the son of Henry. Also there is no evidence of the existence of daughters Experience and Lydia of the fictional Hopestill Leland. Alexander Lovell married Lydia (Unknown). Thomas Holbrook of Medfield and Sherborn married Hannah Shepard and Margaret. Thomas Holbrook of Weymouth married Jane. Experience Leland simply did not exist as a wife of either. However, Henry did have daughter of that name. Henry Leland's will names brother Robert Babcock (see also Granberry p 161) Kempton 453 says he married say 1652 MARGARET (Unknown) born say 1630, died in Sherborn 21 May 1705; Henry's will called Robert Badcock "my loving brother" but he also called Edward Brazier of Charlestown "my brother Brazier." We can not conclude that his wife was a Badcock Considerable work was done on this problem by Neil D. Thompson of Salt Lake City. His report and the Smith-Sanborn notes are on deposit in the Smith-Sanborn manuscript collection at NEHGS.
