Descendants of Henry Brown...Generation No. 1

1. Henry3 Brown (William2 Browne, William1) was born Bef. 1686, and died 1757 in Roanoke County, Virginia. He married Esther. She died May 1762 in Augusta County, Virginia.

Before his death, Henry lived on the banks of the Roanoke River near Salem, in what is today Roanoke County, Virginia. It is now believed that Henry was married twice and that his first three children were by a wife prior to Esther.

Henry's farm was on the edge of the then frontier and hostile Indian incursions were frequent, especially during the years of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), when many of the Indian tribes were allied with the French. After General Braddock's defeat (July 1755) the Indians increased these incursions along the British frontier and in the autumn of 1755 attacked settlers along the upper Roanoke, including Henry's farm. See A Family Sketch by John Thompson Brown for more information. It is also believed that Henry's death was caused Shawnee Indians in an attack that destroyed the nearby settlement of Roanoke in 1757. **** Supplied by Beatrice Calcara
