The Rev. HENRY ARCHDALL (second son of Henry Archdall, of Dublin, by Elizabeth Kelly), was born in Dublin in 1775. He became a Pensioner of Trinity College, Dublin, October 15th 1788, graduated B.A. in 1794, and M.A. in 1818. He was Vicar of Kilmeaden, Co. Waterford, from 1799 until his death. He was collated Prebendary of Seskinan, December 29th 1819, and installed on January 1st 1820. He died, April 11th, and was buried at Kilmeaden, April 14th 1834, in his 59th year.

Death

The Gentleman's Magazine gives a curious account of his death :— "Whilst [the Vicar was] preaching on the text, 'In the midst of Life we are in Death,' one of the congregation was seized with an epileptic fit. This circumstance arrested the attention of all present, but of none more than the preacher, who fixed his eyes with remarkable earnestness upon his afflicted parishioner, and his countenance was observed to exhibit a reflection of every contortion that occurred in the features of the sufferer. It was soon found advisable to bring the service to a close. Upon leaving the church, the Rev. gentleman, having been requested to sign some document concerning parish affairs, was surprised to find himself unable to write ; in fact, his right hand was paralysed. Expecting benefit from exercise, he did not proceed towards the glebe house, but had his gig driven in another direction to the residence of his friend, T. Gamble Esq. of Cullinagh. His disorder, however, gained ground, and was gradually aggravated into an universal paralysis. He became unable to leave Cullinagh, and died there on Thursday evening."

Wife & Children

The Rev. Henry Archdall married, in 1799, Ann, daughter of John Barrington, of Castlewood, Queen's County, and niece of Sir Jonah Barrington, whose Personal Sketches are so well known. By her he had four children :—

Tipperary. He married, in 1835, Matilda, daughter of Thomas Booth, of Whitehaven ; and by her, who was living at Sydney, New South Wales, in 1879, he had ten children.
