- Died after being released from Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the Civil War. Vicksburg had been under seige by the Union Army, and after the men were released, according to information passed down in our family, they were allowed to eat all the watermelon they wanted. As a result he died. He was a private in the 3rd TN Inf, Co. K. Sarah did apply for and received a pension; she later remarried to a White and moved to Dekalb Co., AL. Their son, Lawrence Lorendo Saffels, was my great-grandfather.
