Haymon moved the Shelton family from Stuart, Va to the Coal Fields of WV in 1901. There was no Carpenter work in the Virginia area, and Haymon signed a contract with the Consolidated Coal Co. to build Coal Mining Houses at Kayford, WV. When his contract came up for renewal, he was underbid by some other contractors thus, due to the large family, he went to work in the Coal mines, and was killed in a slate fall on Sept 17, 1907. Haymon's father Alexander, was a well to do farmer in the Stuart, Va area, but he had dis-owned Haymon when he married Ruth Hazelwood, since she was not to Alexanders choosing. A typical Shelton, Haymon would not approach his father for help, and the Shelton Boys had to struggle in the Coal Mines to support the Shelton Family. All the family worked, Ruth took in boarders, and did washing and ironing, while the girls helped out also.
