PARISH
After years of patiently borne illness, the soul of Mrs. Harriet Parish passed from its frail earthly tenement, to the home eternal where there shall be no more sickness nor pain. Mrs. Parish passed away on Saturday morning at 7:10 o'clock, of a complication of diseases, having been in a critical condition for the past week. She had been in poor health for thirty years, and had been confined to her home for five years.

She came of prominent antecendents, being the daughter of Robert and Rachel Hayden Madison, her father being a grandson of Wm. Madison who was the only brother of President James Madison. She was a sister of the late Dr. James P. Madison of Cynthiana. Deceased was born at Richmond, Virginia in 1829. Her father moved to Kentucky and located near Connersville where he had a considerable estate and owned seventy-five slaves.
In 1852 she married Mr. James J. Parish, for many years a leading contractor and builder who erected most of the older buildings in this city. He died in 1880.

[As with many obituaries of the era, this one appears to be accurate when contemporary facts are concerned, but is somewhat fanciful when discussing the family history. There is no evidence that her grandfather, John Madison, was the son of William Taylor Madison. The 1850 Census Slave Schedule shows that her father Robert owned 7 slaves, four of them children.]
