Origins

  • His age at death on 24 Jan 1717 (Lauterecken) was 78y, translating to an estimated birth year of 1638/39.
  • On his [Lauterecken] marriage to Magdalena Catharina Haas, his origin is listed as "Elek, Graffschaft Kühburg, Zürcher Gebiet". A Swiss genealogist "translated" this to be Elgg.
  • LDS-Film #996838 contains Elgg data. Of the many Peters in the church books, there were 3 Conrad Peters:
  1. Hans Conradt Peter b 17 Dec 1637 in Elgg son of Jörg P. and Verena Stadelman. But the same records indicate he was still living in Schneit as late as 1663 still in Schneit.
  2. Hans Conradt Petter b 1646 Rappenstein, son of Jacob P. and Eva Wurmanin. He is not found later in the local churchbooks, but the date is ten years after the Lauterecken Conrad.
  3. Hans Conradt Petter b Oct 1639. His christening record reads:
"1639 Hs Jaggli Petter M. Conradt Mötte Conradt, Dischmacher von Waltenstein; 27 8br; Rägel Schupli Adelheitt Büchi." This translates to: Conrad's godfather was M[eister] Conradt Mötteli, a Dischmacher. Tischmacher means Tischler [carpenter], the occupation Conrad Peter had in Lauterecken. And there is a Haushaltungsrodel (name-list of all parish members) of 1659 and one of 1663 (on LDS Film #2060980), where there is a remark about Conrad: "ist in der Pfalz" (is in Palatine).
  • The baptism of his uncle Andreas Beter (b 22 Feb 1620) includes the following notation:

"1620 Hanns Peter, Andares, Andares Peter, 22 Hornung Barbel Furer, 2 April 1651. Elsbeth Cappeler will hier weg." "will hier weg" (wants to leave). His daughter Elisabetha should have been the godmother of Conrad Beter's son Hans Jacob b 11 Sep 1671. Andreas Beter is mentioned as carpenter of Lautern [Kaiserslautern].

Emigration from Switzerland to der Pfalz

The Swiss Genealogical Society has documents about the emigration of Swiss residents to Germany that may shed light on Conrad's emigration. Hans Conrad Peter is not listed as part of this emigration, but it sheds some light on the time period.

Roughly translated (through Babelfish):

The Tessiner and Buendener building craftsman was the by far largest group. The "Muratori" were modern trained craftsmen and worked more cheaply than the native craftsmen. See [1].

also (from same source):

Roughly translated:

Immigrant from different valleys of the Lombardei, usually building craftsmen. They were called "Caementarii, murarii itali, magistri comacini".

Also: (and this is from, I believe, officials in Trier to the west of Lauterecken:)

Roughly translated (same source):

A certain selection or restriction with the admission or a permission of strangers were guaranteed of official routines, because a new citizen had to submit 200 guldens, or if he could probably nourish himself into its occupations, only 100 guldens. Also no Seelsorger foreigner was allowed to thus set itself, into the country wanted, without a consenting light of the set forward office administration with residents conjugally for zusammengeben.5 the obligation to register of the strangers was by night notes, under menace of a punishment guaranteed by 2 gold guldens, and the quarter reports of the kurtrierischen offices.

Discrepancies

  • Per IGI (Batch #7412201), after 1671 birth of his son, there are other children born to Conrad, but with a wife, MARGARETHA.

Mistake? Second wife? Different couple altogether?

  • IGI (Batch #7412201) claims that the man who marries Magdalena Catharina HAAS was Hanss Jacob BETER, not Hans Conrad.
