Hannah Sproat was born on 23rd October 1796 at Yetholm in Roxburghshire, daughter of Hannah Sproat, formerly Hall, and her husband George Sproat. She was not baptised until she was twelve years old. No trace has yet been found of her having any siblings, nor has it been established when her parents died.
On 5th August 1817, aged 20, Hannah married a George Patterson at Yetholm. They then appear to have spent a few years moving around Roxburghshire, having three children baptised in Roxburgh, then a daughter who gave her birthplace as Morebattle, before returning to Yetholm where they appear to have had at least another two children.
The 1841 census finds Hannah, George and six children living in Town Yetholm, with George working as an agricultural labourer. They were still there in 1851.
George died in 1859. He was described as a retail merchant when he died. After his death, Hannah appears to have continued in that business, running a grocery shop in Town Yetholm. The 1861 census finds her living with a granddaughter at the shop.
Hannah died at her shop on the night of 21st / 22nd March 1864, sometime between 10pm on 21st March and 7am on 22nd March. She was 67 years old.

Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the Hannah Sproat who married George Patterson on the basis that it is in the same parish in which she claimed to have been born and at about the time implied by the ages quoted for her in the censuses.
