Origins

Because there were enough Hannahs contemporary to each other in Sudbury, Marlborough and nearby, linked with the Rice, Ward, Brigham families, closer examination was required to confirm her origins. The following data confirms that she was:

a) daughter of Henry Rice and Elizabeth Moore

b) that she was first married to Eleazar Ward who was killed in King Philip's War in April 1676

c) that she then married Richard Taylor in Sudbury.

Evidence:

1. The will of Henry Rice names his seven daughters one of whom is "Hannah Taylor".

2. The 1686 will of William Ward makes a small bequest to Hannah, wife of Richard Taylor, mother of Hannah by my deceased son Eleazar Ward.

3. The 1719 will of Hannah Brigham Eames Ward supports the case that Hannah Brigham did not marry Eleazar Ward but first Gershom Eams, and second William Ward Jr..

That her birth is not recorded may be explained by NEHGS Volume 17, p. 171, which indicates: "Mid. [Middlesex] records do not contain births, marriages, or deaths from Sudbury in the years 1650, '51, '52 or in '53 prior to the 8th of August."

Legacy

Edmund Rice Association claims she died 11 August 1707, but this documentation has not yet been identified. There is also no probate records for her in the Middlesex index. [Check Essex.] The last mention of her is in the 1695 inventory of her dead husband's estate. The ERA recommends looking for her death in Middlesex County, and most likely in Sudbury, especially on a gravestone in one of the old Sudbury cemeteries (though not any of the ones in what is now Wayland).

The 1694 Administration document made Hannah administratrix of her husband Richard Taylor's estate, who died intestate. She signs it with a mark.
