John Rugg m. (1) 4 Nov 1654 Martha Prescott, m. (2) 4 May 1660 her sister Hannah Prescott who was killed by the Indians 11 Sep 1696.
(Source:Marvin, Abijah P. History of the Town of Lancaster, Massachusetts (40318), p. 127-8, indicates the massacre occurred in 1697, noting it came a few days after the treaty ending King William's War was signed in Europe, due to slow communications. Perhaps this has confused Cutter and others into thinking the year of the massacre was 1696, assuming, naturally, that all hostilities would have ended by the 1697 date given in the Lancaster records. In addition, as a confirmatory detail, she is labeled a widow in the records, her husband John Rugg dying bef. Jan 1697 when his inventory was taken, and this is the type of qualitative detail that is far less likely to be recorded erroneously than writing a year.)
