- ↑ Leonard cites a personal record in saying Hannah died "about 1839". However, Benjamin's death record in 1846 says he is married, and no re-marriage is found that would explain this. The gravestone identifies Hannah as the wife of Benjamin, and the age matches, so it appears the rumors of death in 1839 are exaggerated. The 1850 death record lists parents as Samuel and Abigail, and birthplace as Rutland. There was no couple named Samuel and Abigail having children in Rutland, and so this appears to be a lack of knowledge by the informant, who is probably a Gates with no particular connection to the Newtons, as Hannah was a second wife, and had no children.
