Mr. King settled at Salem, Mass., where he was made Freeman (May 26, 1636) and received grants of land--one of 40 acres at Jeffreys Creek, now "Manchester by the Sea," and one of 30 acres at "Royall Side" at the head of Bass river, now Beverly, where he established his homestead. The King(e) Family, Rufus King, 1890's William Kinge of Salem, Mass., was born in England about 1595, and is first traced in a list of 106 passengers entitled "Bound for New England, Waymouth, ye 20 March 1635"* This list includes the following names: William Kinge, aged 40, + Dorothy his wife, aged 34, Mary Kinge his daughter, aged 12, Katheryn his daughter, aged 10, Willm Kinge his sonne, aged 8, Hanna Kinge his daughter, aged 6. [edit] Hannah's Portion of Father's EstateMr. King built a house near the river on the north portion of this land and lived there until he died in 1650, intestate. The widow, Dorothie, and William, the eldest son, were ordered by the Court on February 3, 1650, to dispose of the estate (town men didn't want the family to stick around and spread their beliefs!), which was appraised at one hundred and twelve pounds, from which William, the eldest, was to have a double portion of twenty pounds; Samuel, John, Hannah, Mehitable, and Deliverance were to have ten poinds each, and Mary, wife of John Scudder, and Katherine, wife of John Swaysy, five pounds each. John was to serve his brother, William, seven years, and Samuel was to serve him three years. By agreement with his mother, William had the homestead. The agreement was sworn to by John Weston, July 1, 1685. [edit] Documentation
