Facts and Events
[edit] ParentageSource:United States, Massachusetts, Middlesex, Woburn. Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, 1640-1900, p. 3:226, shows clearly that Joseph Richardson married a Hannah Green: Joseph Richardson and Hannah Green, [married] Nov. 5, 1666. There are two Hannah Greens born about 1647. One is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Green of Malden, and there is no recorded birth for her, though her birth is estimated to be about 1647. The other is the daughter of William and Hannah Green of Woburn. Her birth is recorded in the Woburn Records, p. 1:110: Green, Hannah, d. of William and Hannah, [born] Feb. 7, 1647. Source:The history of Woburn, Middlesex County, Mass. : from the grant of its territory to Charlestown, in 1640, to the year 1860, p. 615, is one of the more significant sources supporting William and Hannah Green as Hannah's parents. On the other hand, Rev. John Vinton's two important works, Source:The Vinton memorial, comprising a genealogy of the descendants of John Vinton of Lynn, 1648 : also, genealogical sketches of several allied families, namely, those and Source:The Richardson memorial : comprising a full history and genealogy of the posterity of the three brothers, Ezekiel, Samuel and Thomas Richardson, who came from England, both champion the Thomas and Elizabeth Green case. The Vinton Memorial, p. 395, gives the will of Thomas Green, dated 12 Nov 1667, who mentions a daughter Hannah, but there is no indication of whether she is married or not. It is the probate files for William Green that provide us with the answer. The will itself (Person:William Green (27)) only names his eldest son. It refers to other children, including daughters, but does not name them. But the website William Green of Charlestown / Woburn kindly provides the text of a receipt dated 2 Jun 1671, after Hannah had come of age, by Thomas Knowlton, for his wife Hannah's share of the estate. It establishes that William's daughter Hannah married Thomas Knowlton (is this Person:Hannah Green (4)?), meaning that it was Thomas' daughter Hannah that married Joseph Richardson. Note that, having settled on Thomas and Elizabeth Green as parents, we can no longer use 7 Feb 1646/7 as the birthdate, because that belongs to the other Hannah. --Jrich 16:48, 17 November 2008 (EST) References
