Grace Dovenbarger

Grace I. Dovenbarger, 95, of Benedict, died December 20, 2003 in York. She was born July 14, 1908, in York County to Chester Arthur and Carrie A. (Smith) Folts. Grace was a graduate of York High School, and after acquired two additional years of college training, taught in two rural country schools for two years. She was married to Willard Burdette Dovenbarger on April 20, 1930, in Lushton by a Reverend McKelvey. They farmed until retirement, first on a farm in Lockridge Township southwest of Benedict, then on the Dovenbarger Homestead northeast of Benedict. They raised four sons: Willard Dale, Delbert Dean, Robert Darrell and Alan Lyle. While living and working on the Lockridge Township farm, Grace and Burdette were members of the rural Shiloh United Brethren Church. After moving to the Dovenbarger Homestead, Grace joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict and served in that church for many years. Grace always had a special interest and passion for flowers. After they retired from farming and moved to town, she raised lots of them. She enjoyed decorating her church with fresh flowers every Sunday while they were in season, as long as she was able to attend church services. She was an active member of the Women of the ELCA. After her youngest son entered high school, Grace served as an Avon sales representative in the Benedict community for several years. Survivors include two sons; Dale and Merlene (Thompson) Dovenbarger of Benedict; Darrell and Judy (Kerr) Dovenbarger of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters-in-law; Catherine (Hoesche) Dovenbarger of Osceola and Alice (Anderson) Dovenbarger of Lincoln; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Lucille Walkup of York; one brother, Arlo Folts of San Diego, CA; three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Evelyn (George) Folts of York; Mrs. Grayce (Arlo) Folts of San Diego, CA and Mrs. Evelyn (Marshall) Folts of York. Preceding her in death were her husband, Burdette; two sons, Lyle and Dean; her parents; four brothers: George, Virgil, Marshall and Melvin; and three sisters: Mildred, Cleo and Bernice. Funeral services were Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict with Leroy Hoyer officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in York.
