Smith, Giles. Born abt. 1603, since he was freed from training Apr. 1663, having then attained age of 60. Settled in Hartford by 1639, where he received land "by courtesy of the town"; not a proprietor or freeman. He wrote letter to John Winthrop, Jr., at New London, 22 Feb. 1649, saying he was coming to settle there. Here he was one of the earliest settlers, but shortly rem. to Fairfield, where he entered for record 17 Dec. 1651, land purchased from George Stuckey, and by 1658 bought land also from John Fossecar and William Hayden.
