    Giles Smith, an inhabitant who received land “by the courtesie of the town;” his home-lot in 1639 was on Main St., on the corner of what is now Charter Oak St., a small lot cut off from the square occupied by George Wyllys. He sold 20 acres to Thomas Hosmer, March 6, 1642; Philip Davis bought his land and tenement. He was one of the earliest settlers at New London, but removed from them to Fairfield, where he was in 1651; d. there, 1669; he left a second wife, Eunice, not the mother of his children, who had been widow of Jonathan Porter, of Huntington, L. I.

    Smith, Giles. Born abt. 1603, since he was freed from training Apr. 1663, having then attained age of 60. Settled in Hartford by 1639, where he received land "by courtesy of the town"; not a proprietor or freeman. He wrote letter to John Winthrop, Jr., at New London, 22 Feb. 1649, saying he was coming to settle there. Here he was one of the earliest settlers, but shortly rem. to Fairfield, where he entered for record 17 Dec. 1651, land purchased from George Stuckey, and by 1658 bought land also from John Fossecar and William Hayden. He d. in 1669. He m. (1) -----. He m. (2) Eunice, widow of Jonathan Porter of Huntington, L. I. Will 10 Sept. 1669, proved 14 Jan. 1669 [1669/70]; to wife, Est.
