[edit] OriginsUnknown [edit] Life in New EnglandIn Ipswich, MA by 1648. Commoner 1664. He was a planter. Lived 8 years on Brooke Street. Owned a lot situated on Great Hill, Hogg Island. He was the primary heir of the estate of Andrew Hodges. Hodges' will, dated 11 Oct 1665 and proved 27 Mar 1666 (see Vol. XI, folio 96, Office of Clerk of Courts, Salem, MA), lists no children, but gives most of his estate to *nephew* Giles Birdley. [edit] LegacyWhen he died in 1668, those surviving him included his wife, Elizabeth, and children: Andrew, James, Giles [Jr.], and perhaps John, the youngest, who probably died before his father. Will recorded 18 Jul 1668 (Essex Registry of Probate, volume 1). "Genealogical record of the Hodges family of New England" writes about him: Giles Birdley or Burley was of Ipswich, where he died in 1668. His wife, Rebecca, was born in 1626, and married (2nd), at Ipswich, Jan 7, 1668/9, Abraham Fitt of Ipswich. Giles Birdley had at least 4 children: i. Andrew Burley b. 1657 Sept 5; d. 1718 Feb 1; m. 1681, March 14 Ipswich Mary Conant. ii. James Burley, b. 1659 Feb 10; d. abt 1721, Exeter, NH; married Rebecca Stacey, dau of THomas and Susanna (Worcester) Stacey; iii and iv. twins John Burley and Giles Burley. b. 1662 Jul 13. References
