His most often used phrase during his married life was, "Mary just half a cup of coffee". This lead someone to buy two porcelain half cups, they each had in gold letters the words, "You said just half a cup". For a time these cups were used, but later they were hung on the kitchen wall for many, many years.
Gil only smoked Lucky Strike cigarettes, chewed Wrigleys Spearmint Gum, and wore Old Spice after shave and powders. Gil also had to have mashed potatoes with every meal, he like to dip them into other things like peas and corn.
He was also a carpenter who make a set of kitchen cabinets that as of 2006 were still on the walls of the kitchen in 3139 Keswick Road. He also made a set of cars from carved blocks of wood. These were given to Gibby and Gary one Christmas when the family could not afford toys.
He was also a very skilled mechanic who kept an old furnance at 3139 Keswick Road working well past its years. It was converted from a coal burning furnace to an oil burning furnace. Odell, Gil's older brother died in a furnace explosion this didn't seem to worry my mother as she would listen working in the basement from the kitchen. Only once did she make the remark that he should be careful not to be blown up like Odell. He didn't like that remark at all and said something like, "I ain't Odell".
He used to sit on the front porch with my mother on summer eveinings and he would sometimes play the guitar and sing, "You Are My Sunshine" to my mother. They would sit on the porch for hours and watch me play with the Shaffer children who lived next door.
Then later I would lay with my head on my mother's lap and my legs in my father's and almost fall asleep.
